TELEVISION GRAPHICS PACKAGES

GRIDIRON GLORY SEAson 23

FALL 2022 // Gridiron Glory is an Emmy award-winning television sports program covering high school football in southeast Ohio. The 30-minute live newscasts air Friday nights on WOUB and are produced entirely by Ohio University students. In my senior year, as the producer of Season 23, my primary goal was to implement a new graphics package that improved storytelling, established structure, and maintained consistency.

TICKER & LOWER THIRDS

Our ticker and lowers were long overdue for a modern coat of paint that matched the style of other new assets. I designed this concept in Adobe, wrote a thorough pitch to our graphics engineers, and provided them with these assets to be converted to broadcast templates. The lower thirds were fully implemented, but the ticker was not finished in time for Season 23.

ON-SET MONITORS

Our monitor setup presented an excellent opportunity to create graphics that added structure to storytelling and managed the flow of the show. In addition to the animations that loop on our small screens, I designed motion graphics to communicate the order of content, add geographic context, and featured the logos of teams covered in a segment.

CAMPAIGNS & FINALE

Near the end of each season, Gridiron Glory keeps fans engaged with the buildup to voting for Player of the Year. 12 players are named to a watchlist in Week 9, which is narrowed down to 5 finalists three weeks later. The winner is revealed on the season finale, alongside the Coach of the Year and all 50 members of the All-GG Team. These set monitors, transition animations, and promos serve to promote engagement, build excitement, and communicate information for the hour-long finale.

HARDWOOD HEROES 2022

SPRING 2022 // Hardwood Heroes is a student-produced newscast at Ohio University covering boys and girls high school basketball in the surrounding Tri-Valley Conference. The live-to-tape newscasts air during the spring semester on WOUB. At the time I was appointed producer, the show did not rely heavily on graphics — they were used only to supplement video where necessary. But with my background in graphic design, I wanted to bring our show up to par with top-market productions that are entirely tied together by their graphics.

RENDERED VIDEO ASSETS

In addition to the templates I pitched, I designed pre-rendered motion graphics for use on the show, digital platforms, and promotional materials. High points of the package include the show's opening sequence, branding for a feature storytelling segment, transition animations, episodic promos for PBS, and social media campaign promotions.

PITCHING GRAPHICS TEMPLATES

In my vision, tying the show together visually called for new graphics templates that are stylistically consistent, and using those templates to enhance every block of every story. In doing so, I wrote an extenive pitch and provide concept art for our graphics engineers to build upon. Though I was not responsible for the final implemented product, I take great pride in the influence my creative oversight had in this process.

Grassroots Health REBRAND Trailer

After thirteen years as "The Grassroots Project," the mission of this Washington D.C. non-profit had evolved beyond the scope of HIV prevention in the metro area. I was put in charge of the visual identity of the new "Grassroots Health" — to reflect a youthful, innovative, high-energy approach to health education. These are the motion graphics from the trailer unveiling the rebrand.

740 Zone Season finale

To honor the talented football players of southeast Ohio, the 740 Zone selected 50 players from all parts of the region to comprise the All-740 Team. The team featured athletes at each position on the field, created with the idea of an “All-Star” roster in mind. We revealed the team in the season finale of our student-operated web show — and these motion graphics helped bring the episode to life.

SOUTHERN OHIO COPPERHEADS “FAN OF THE YEAR” ADVERTISEMENT

In the face of an unprecedented pandemic, this collegiate baseball team was searching for ways to keep their small-town community excited about baseball while also raising the funds to keep their team around. The Fan of the Year campaign allowed fans to donate their ticket money back to the team, in exchange for a chance to rename the team after whatever they’d like for one game next year.

“Dylan joins the battle!” smash bros. trailer parody

As one of my first design endeavors, I largely grew familiar with the Adobe suite by mimicking the art styles of the trailers announcing characters for the Super Smash Bros. games. After perfecting the craft in Photoshop, I tried my hand at animations using Premiere Pro. This interpretation, featuring my Mii character, was my first “successful” motion graphics endeavor.

USER INTERFACE MOCKUPS

Grassroots Health WEB DESIGN MOCKUP

Designed to roll out with the rebranding of Grassroots Health, I developed a large-scale vision for an overhauled grassrootshealth.us. After creating the sitemap, I used Adobe XD, Photoshop, and Premiere to create a mockup video that visualized the interactive elements, brand implementation, and general layout. My internship at Grassroots concluded shortly after the site entered prototyping

nintendo switch new features hoax

What began as a “what if” design project would soon send the internet into a spiral when I framed my concept for a Nintendo Switch firmware update as an employee “leak.” Tens of thousands of fans took to Twitter, Reddit, and YouTube to debate the veracity of the video. This is the original footage behind the infamous Nintendo Switch “v5.0 leak,” widely hailed as one of the most well-made Nintendo mockups.

super smash bros. — video game interface concept

My love of pop culture and its artwork is really what prompted me to teach myself the ins & outs of the Adobe creative suite. This animation is one of many results of imitation and inspiration from the user interfaces of Nintendo games. With a new Super Smash Bros. game on the horizon, I coped with my impatience by creating a prospective character select screen using motion graphics.

mario kart tour — mobile game interface concept

Much like my other video game interface projects, this concept for a Mario Kart mobile game is the product of speculation on another upcoming video game. I chose to visualize my boldest predictions using motion graphics, which proved essential to learning the basics of Adobe Premiere and After Effects.
